I find prepositions quite hard to deal with. Prepositions following nouns, following verbs, following adjectives. There's almost a special preposition for each word or situation and no rules to stick to!! Sometimes, the differences in meaning and use are so slight that it's difficult to make a point. I think it has to do with the student's native language as well.
Think of prepositions this way: they are small words joining a noun or a pronoun, and adds meaning to the rest of the sentence. In most cases, they can be though of as places. At, In, For, Around, Within, On, Below, Atop... the list can go on for a long time. If you have a sentence that has a prep phrase in it, put parenthesis around it.
