For anyone who read a chapter entitled "Story of an Option" in one of my Writer's Guide to Hollywood books, you know I left out names. One of those names was in the news today -
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20060104/D8ETHFQOC.htmlI co-wrote a screenplay about modern-day piracy set in the Caribbean. It was optioned by Bob & Jack Abramoff who had recently produced "Red Scorpion" with Dolph Lungren, which was shot in Africa.
The Abramoffs had some deal cooking with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, who had a daughter who wanted to act. So the setting changes to the South China Sea and the evil pirates are Thai.
Only the Prime Minister decides that the Abramoffs are working with the CIA and that's why they made "Red Scorpion" in Namibia. He refuses to fund the movie. The option expires and we get the script back.
We sell it later to the guy who wrote and produced "Natural Causes" -
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110634/ - who had Thai backing. The bad guys became Malays.
Then that guy disappears, I believe with some of the budget, the movie never gets made, and some Thai investor now owns the script, beats me who.
I think he should change the setting to the Washington seas...
Small world. Maybe the Malaysian was right.
(Go ahead, all you anti-Repubs, snide away. I'd sell a script to Ross Perot if he was making movies. Or Lyndon LaRouche. Or Teresa Heinz Kerry. And so would you.)
