Polite or impolite

It happened to me that i once complimented my friend and this how the conversations go on...

Me: Oh, you look beatiful today!

My Friend: No la, it just so ugly.

Emmmm....what do you think her response? Polite or impolite? Direct agreement or indrect agreement? Direct or indirect disagreement?

If your friend is a Chinese, it's pretty common for her to say so. Emm, that's what we call "culture", basically. but if she was not in a good mood that day, perhaps she would also say "no" .

Well, may be that's how she says "Thank you", in which case I'd say she was humble and polite.

In the UK as well, we don't like to accept compliments very graciously I'm afraid, we will usually come back with 'Oh but ......'. we are pleased really, it is just seen as big-headed to agree.
