Police

The police have found the thieves.

The police are investigating the robbery.

Do you know why the word 'police' is plural?

The army has a lot of resources.

The navy has a lot of vessels.

The air force has/posesses a lot of fighter aircraft.

When it comes to the army, the navy and the air force, it follows the standard rules.

According to my dictionary "police" occurs only in plural, the others have a singular and plural: army/armies, navy/navies, air force/air forces. So its indeed correct. However, I remember that I have read somewhere, that especially in AmE you may also find: The police has found the thieves.

Guten Morgen, Eagle.

I hope your memory is incorrect. Otherwise, I have to go through a cataclysmic reform of the grammar rules already under my belt.

It would seem so. I tried hard to find it again and failed, so probably my memory had failed me. Let's just forget the **** about "police has".

Army/navy/airforce: considered as an institution/organization - signular.

Theoretical grammar says "police" can also appear with the meaing of institution in the singular, though the dictionary really says it is always in the plural. Here is an explanation I found in a book from university. It refers to the so-called "collective nouns".

There are three types of collective noun
