Are poise bar and beam the same thing when referring to scales?

Wow! Do you have a reference? I'd think it relates to gymnastics!

I'm quite familiar with the beam on a scale, but not "poise bar." There must be diagrams online.

Of course the bar and the beam are both used in gymnastics, and "poise" is vital.

I'm not saying the expression isn't used with scales - just that I've never heard it.

I'll allow you may have seen "poise bar" elsewhere. (I'll read it again.)

It's a new one on me.

They obviously have the same function.

To determine whether or not the expression "poise bar" is restricted to one particular design, I'd have to do some reasearch.

Perhaps someone else knows off the top of his head.

According to my recollection, the expression "beam balance" refers only to the type shown in your picture. Actually, you could put the sample in either pan and the known weights in the other.

The design with the sliding weights is more sophisticated (double beam, etc.) while the balance beam is more elegant.

Hmm, I see that both are actually referred to as "balance beam scales."
