Point out?

Hi,
in this sentence

"The following guide is meant to point out the principal differences" if it were, "guide is meant to point the principal difference" what would change? I try to understand the usage of "out" here.

Thanks

Point out means clearly indicate . It is idiomatic. Out is an intensifier, I believe.
