I've been reading the book "Jarhead", about the adventures of a U.S. Marine, and I am confused about the term "pogey bait". Is a pogey a jail?

More properly 'gillie' from Gaelic 'gille' a lad or servant. A gillie was one who attended a Chief, but is now one who helps out hunters and fishers in Scotland.
"Jarhead" is an interesting book.
