What poetic device occurs in the phrase "they were armed to the teeth" and what is the poetic device called that has hidden words or sounds within the poem. ie, the 'f' sound occurs continually and represents the flapping of a birds wings.

"Armed to the teeth" is a metaphor. It refers back - maybe to the 14th century - when soldiers started to wear body-armour that covered them from their ankles up to their teeth. It means that someone is confronting you in a formiddable way

If sounds are repeated at the beginning of words, it is called alliteration:

- My feathered friend fluttered forth to the forest
