Essay & Composition Writing

Poem personal response

So here is the Poem I had to write a person response on. Thanks!

The Screen
I think TVs really do somthing
to people.

I've been on a thousand flights before, when
the stewardesses get up to the show
the passengers how to save
their lives
(and then the people just look out the
windows, maybe at the engines or the sky, or at their

hands)

I was on a flight once when all that
stuff was prerecorded, put down on VHS
(The woman on the monitor was so
happy, helpful, and full of smiles)

Every eye in that cabin was glue to
the screen. They all watched the whole thing

I think the
airlines know: The screen is magic

Write a personal response to "The Screen". In your response, consider
- the idea the poem expresses about the power of television on the airline passengers.
-the word choices of the poet

- the extent to which you agree or disagree with the ideas presented in the poem.

- your personal experiences with television and flying, connecting them to the ideas in the poem.

- the strenght and effectiveness of your writer's voice.

MY personal response:

It’s fascinating as to how peoples eyes tend to be more attracted to a screen than a real life figure of a human being. Almost like a magnet that swiftly attracts any metals surrounding it.

In “The Screen” by Terrence Chiusano, the author is portraying the impact Television has on society. The airline passengers’ paid little to no attention to a real life figure, the stewardess, while she was attempting to guide them in a life saving precedure. Sadly, once the procedure was pre-recorded and played on a TV screen, it easily attracted the passengers attentions. The poet has written in such simple words to perhaps get the readers attention as well, just as the meaning of his poem. This clearly proves how society is so attached to the commands of a computer rather than a person.

On a personal experience with flying, I have only encountered the traditional stewardess standing at the front of the aisle explaining the pamphlet and procedures in certain situations. I personally listened to every single word she had to say as it was my first time on a plane. The poet depicts how television gets more attention than a human figure would. It is almost as if the passangers are annoyed and intolerant where the same situation could be seen with children. The focus is kept within their own interests and tasks such as looking out the window, preparing mp3 players and laptops. Whereas a recorded video of instructions would have a better results and within minutes everyone would have the process locked in their minds and ready to go.

Our minds are becoming more lazy day by day. Sad to say, just as a child is more attracted to fancy special effects and playful colours so are adults.
