Poem by D.H.Lawrence

Can you please help me?

What is the irony in these lines from the poem Snake by D.H.Lawrence?

"the poet is filled with horror and protest when the snake prepares to retreat and bury itself in the 'horrid black','dreadful' hole.

Hi Though there are a few ways of interpreting this, I would bring out the irony like this: The poet protests when the snake hurries into the hole. However, he throws a log at the snake to get rid of him(snake). After that, he regrets it.
