Plural/singular nouns

Are both of these correct?

There was a lion and giraffes.

There were a lion and giraffes.

(I'm aware that putting the plural nouns in the front of the sentence would be a better option)

Hi The plural must be formally correct but, in London, we do use 'There +be' in the singular to describe situations that involve plurals, especially with an apostrophe - There's many museums to visit here I'd say that's natural informal speech Dave

I'm not aware of that. These are the natural choices:

There was a lion and some giraffes.

There were some giraffes and a lion.
