Plurals with Police
When referring to the State Police, do we use plurals because we're referring to police, or do we use singulars because we're referring to the State Police as a singular unit? So, would we say Illinois State Police were called or Illinois State Police was called? I want to go with making everything plural, but I wanted to check.
#1. The police were contacted/called.
#2. The police department was called.
Are both #1 and #2 correct?
