Plurals of words in italics

Hi.

Harold said, "My English teacher said that I used one too many whatsoevers, however and wherevers in my essay."

Italicize the words themselves, but use a roman s, correct?

The only time we'd use the apostrophe would be to enhance readability, yes? See below.

... his's, as's, etc. as deemed necessary or on an as-needed basis, correct?

Do you agree with all?

Rewrite it. My teacher said the words his, as, whatsoever, and whoever are overused in my writing. If I saw "his's" I'd think you'd made a mistake.

Not when you're quoting the direct words of another. There has to be a solution to it.

There is more to good writing than finding "rules" that govern your your situation.

Good writing requires good choices in your writing style. Part of that is knowing when to stop looking for rules and to recast your sentence.

Theoretically, if it were a transcript, we're screwed, then, huh? I don't buy it. There should always be a solution in lieu of a suggested recast. That's the easy way out.

Well, fortunately for us both, I am not selling it. I hope you can find somewhere else to buy it.

To further simplify, do as the Brits do: place single markers around 'words as words' and 'letters as letters'. Much, much better, methinks.

'his's
'as's
'whatsoever's
'however's
'wherever's
'7's
'X's
'm's

Oh yeah, Bub.

As some Brits do; not many, I think.
