Plural was or were

I am writing a letter that someone has proof read and told me the was in the sentance needs to be were, but it doesn't sound correct to me when I read it with were. I wanted a second opinion.

This is the sentance:
When the home study got to her from Pasco there was only about three days left before the background checks expired and it was Thursday afternoon before July 4th.
