Plural vs Singular

I am puzzled about whether "a company" is a singular or plural noun becasue I always found a sentence like this one:

XX company was/were asked to carrry out a study.......

Could anybody give me a rule/clue how I can deal with this problem??

as far as i know, company should take a singular verb. companies, on the other hand, should go with a plural verb.

Are you rather certain of "completely agree" being more acceptable as opposed to "entirely agree".. I am certain on this and , in fact, it is more common, atleast in AmE.

That's my point, as per my earlier postings. 'Entirely agree' is not wrong but rather less frequently used than 'completely agree'.Emotion: smile.
