It happens in Chinese. As I know, there are two situations. One is original surname. Sometimes, there are more than two words as a surname-- a plural surname. For example, Ouyang. Ou could be a kind of surname.(ex: Rose Ou) Yang could be a surname as well.(ex: Peggy Yang) Ouyang would be ok, of course. (ex: Fei Ouyang) Or, take Mrs. Chen, her full name is Iris Lin. She is married to a man called

To get back to the original question:

The Smith family are the Smiths.
The Jones family are the Joneses.
The Kennedy family are the Kennedys (not the Kennedies)

You can also say "the Smith Brothers" or "The Smith family came to the party". In this it is better to treat them as a plural noun. "The Smith family want to come."
