Plural, singular related

Suppose there are 10 dogs, and I measured the tail length of each dog.

Which one is more appropriate. Also do I need the first "the"?
The tail length of the dogs was measured.
The tail lengths of the dogs were measured.

That would be the second one- The tail lengths of the dogs were measured. OR- The tail length of each dog was measured.
