Hello, "Central to 16th-century Japanese imagination of the world was the notion of a multitude of lords over whom Japanese emperors sought to position themselves as overlord."
I came across this passage in an academic text. Is it correct for "overlord" to be singular here? Would "the overlord" or "overlords" be also correct?
Thank you.

I suppose the "logic" is that you can only have one emperor at a time. However, I personally think "overlords" would fit much better.
