Plural... right?

"He likes to eat watermelon."

I spotted that sentence in an English reference book. Usually we say "... likes to eat apples/oranges/burgers" etc so in this case, should we use the plural form instead so it becomes:
"He likes to eat watermelons."?

Singular or plural?

Thanks in advance.

He likes to eat watermelon -- 'Watermelon' is uncountable here. Since watermelons are so big, the plural sounds humorous in that sentence.
