Plural or singular

Hi teachers,

I found this online [~no offense to the writer]

Africa's the second largest continent. While in many continents much of the population are in urban areas, the majority of people living in Africa live in rural areas instead of cities.

Is "are" correct usage?

Thanks

TN

In BrE, nouns that are grammatically singular but refer to entities that are logically plural, such as groups of people, can take a plural noun. Thus "much of the population are in urban areas" is more tolerable in BrE, but even so, in careful writing I prefer "is".
