Plural or singular

Which is correct if we are talking about one nose ring?

Not a lot of guys have a nose ring/nose rings.

If you say 'nose rings' when you only mean one, then it would be impossible without re-working the sentence to differentiate between the men who (don't) have one or several.
Stick with the singular.
