Grammar

plural or singular

For example, I taught 20 students in my cram school and each of them were aiming at different (or mostly different) universities.

> To my relief, most of them have passed the exams of the universities of their first choices.

Is the sentence above weird, especially in regard to whether the underlined parts should be plural or singular ?

Please help me.

I would say "aiming for". It's more common to say it that way for a goal, and to use "aiming at" for archery or target shooting.
