Clarencetsang: If you have decided that you wish to start your sentence with "My favorite food...," you have two options: (1) You may follow the "rule" -- "food" is singular. I'm sorry, but I can't agree with this.

The most natural thing is to reverse it, as Mr. M has done: Apple are my favorite food.

However, if for some reason, you had to start with "My favorite food" than I would say "is" - the singular "favorite food" is the subject, and takes "is."

I wouldn't say "My favorite food are bananas."

I agree -- "Bananas are my favorite food" is fine. "My favorite food is bananas" is fine.

"My favorite food are bananas" -- never in a million years.

AnonymousMost native speakers probably prefer to say "My favorite food are bananas." They feel that it sounds more natural. It is certainly preferred in conversation.
An improvement in your linguistic instincts for what native speakers prefer is sorely needed! This remark is totally misguided. I don't know where you got this idea unless you just made it up.
