Plural Or Singular?

I am not sure which sentence is grammatically correct. I have 'Googled' and found equal examples of both usages.
Any help is greatly appeciated. Thank you.

Adorning the thousands of apple varieties on the planet is a host of beautiful names.

Adorning the thousands of apple varieties on he planet are a host of beautiful names.
