plural or singular?

The committee (leads, lead) very different lives in private.

I thought it is leads, but the answer shows it is lead.

Could anyone explains to me why it is lead?

The committee can be thought of as a single unit or as the individuals within that unit.
As a single unit the committee (sing.) debates, but as separate individuals the committee (pl.) lead very different lives.
