Plural or Singular?

If, for example, each student attends a different university, which is more appropriate to say using "they" instead of "each student"?

1. They will attend a university.
2. They will attend universities.

What's the difference between these two sentences, if there is any?

Right. And why use the future tense if they attend university now, as Gori's question suggests?

Dear Marius,

I see. Maybe my example was not good. Okay, how about the following sentences?

1. They will attend a seminar.
2. They will attend seminars.

Gori1. They will attend a seminar.
2. They will attend seminars.

1. OK.
2. This is correct grammatically, but a little too dry and short.
Perhaps:
2. They will attend several seminars in the upcoming months.
