Plural or singular

How should I write:
In the classroom THERE ARE / THERE IS a tortoise, a parrot and a few fishes.

in the sentence, the main part is "classroom", since u r talking about only one classroom, THERE IS, should be used.

It is no exactly because of that. If you omit the starting "in the classroom" you have to use "there is" anyways.

The reason is that the first noun after the "there + be + noun" form is SINGULAR. You say and write "there is a tortoise and two million parrots", but "there are two million parrots and a tortoise".
