Plural nouns versus singular nouns

hi,

i always come across plural nouns are being used more often to mean 'general' than singular nouns.
for example,
"i always buy magazines at this shop."

Can someone please explain this?

As plural being the case of 'general', would it still be wrong if i write, 'i always buy a magazine'?

Only if you are speaking of some contextual occasions on which you buy one magazine, as for train trips.
