Plural in differnce between

Mark saw differences between mathematical and artistic approach of analysis.
If comparing similar items then the phrase "difference between" is followed by plural or singular?

In the above case, why should it be approaches/approach?

Is this grammatically correct with "the" before mathematical and before artistic? Reason?
