Plural

I'm a little confused. Which sentence is grammatically correct?

1.Their desperation overshadows

2. Their desperation overshadow

Does the plural rule follow their or desperation?

Thanks for the help

The verb agrees with the noun "desperation" so (1) is correct. The modifier "their" isn't relevant to this agreement. , "Her eyes are brown".
