Grammar

Plural

hi,

this is what i came across in/on a newspaper.

'The school holidays are here again. it's a short break and it's time to be spent with your family'.

my question is can we replace the holidays with 'it' when the structure is already plural?

Thanks.

The school holidays are here again. It's a short break- a time to be spent with your family. 'It' is used here for the collective noun 'vacation' which we can put in place of 'school holidays'.

  • The school holidays are here again.
  • It's a short break- a time to be spent with your family.
  • 'It' is used here for the collective noun 'vacation' which we can put in place of 'school holidays'.
  • I think this sounds better: The school vacation is here again.
  • It's a short break- a time to be spent with your family.

I actually think 'it' refers to the period of time that the holidays last. That is a short break.
