How would you feel to find a 300 thousand check?



I was wondering about the guy who may found my check. It was 300 thousand Nakfa check. God, how did I lose that check? It was in the summer of 2006 the time was around 11:00 o’clock still in my bedroom sleeping and listening to music. Suddenly I heard someone knocking my door; it was my mom who was knocking my door.



My mom told me to weak up and eat my breakfast, I didn’t really listen to her and again I went back to the bed, but I couldn’t sleep and I went to my dad’s office. Everyone was quiet and working, I walked in and nobody really cared about me. I sat in the office and started to read a newspaper, which surprised office workers but after 2 minutes I started to nag the driver if he can teach me how to drive a car. Everybody was annoyed but there was nothing they can do about it, even though they told me to hush they know I am not going to discontinue talking.



I went out and stand by the door and I started to look at the kids who were playing football. While I was staring at the kids I saw my mom car coming and I went to upstairs to watch TV because I wasn’t allowed to be in the office. I got upstairs and started watching TV unexpectedly I saw my mom in the TV room with an angry face.



“What did you do in the office” asked my mom

“Nothing I didn’t even go to the office” I said

“So are you telling me that Jacob is a lair” my mom said

Then I knew Jacob already told her about what I did in the office and I realize the only thing I had to do was admit. And I said sorry for the first time in my entire life. My mom left the room and I started to watch TV again.



It was around 1 o’clock when my mom called me to eat lunch, while we were eating lunch I asked my mom if I can start to work in the office and get some money. My mom said ok and she also allowed me that I can start to working in the office after 2 o’clock. I also promised her that I am going to behave well.



2 o’clock it was my first time to work in the office and I straightly

Went to Jacob’s office and asked him if he can give me something to do.

“Just write your name 100 times in the A4 paper,” said Jacob

“Why?” I asked.

“because that is the only thing you can do Simon beside watching TV” said

Jacob.



I felt like crashing his head with the chair but I smiled like I wasn’t angry. Meanwhile I heard the phone ringing and I rushed to the phone and I picked the phone it was Hanna. Hanna is the business manger at my dad’s company, and she asked me if she could talk to Jacob. I gave the phone to Jacob, when he finished talking.

“why did she called?” I asked Jacob

“because she likes you” said Jacob

“I am serious” I said

“she called to ask me if I can send her the check now” said Jacob

“What is the check for?” I asked

“since it is the end of the month she need to pay all the bills, like she has to pay the workers their salary and some other bills like the electric bills” said Jacob.

“so why don’t you send the check if she needs it?” I asked again

“because the driver is not here,” said Jacob



While we were talking my mom came and asked Jacob if anybody called her. He told her that Hanna needs the check before 3 o’clock because the bank is going to be closed in 4 o’clock and the bank is closed during weekends. I saw my mom signing the check and putting it in an envelope. But on the way out she met people that she had a appointment with, my mom completely forgot about it but. And she gave the check to me and told me to go to the company and give them. I couldn’t believe about what just happened, and I checked the envelope put it was closed.



When she took the guests to her office she called me and told me to change my clothes and go to the company. I didn’t hear my mom’s advice and I went straightly to the door. I carried the envelope and started walking, I was wearing shorts and an ugly t-shirt and everybody was staring at me. The company is about 1 km away from my dad’s office I felt like taking a taxi but I didn’t have my wallet with me.



The sun was burning and I was tired. I thought I saw classmate that I knew before, when I got closer to him. I realized it was Yosief, he is my old friend. He greeted me gloriously and begged me if I can go to his house and play a game or watch TV together.

“I have to give this envelope first to my dad’s company” I said

“don’t worry about it, we can ask my brother to give the check to your dad’s ompany when we get home” said Yosief.



I agreed with him and we started to walk to his house. His house wasn’t far from the place we met and we got to his house after 5min. He already had his own key and we straightly went to the TV room, nobody was in the house even his brother wasn’t home. and I asked “Where is your brother”.

“don’t worry he is going to be here in minute anyways” said Yosief.

“how do you know?” I asked again.

“because he always comes home around this time, he doesn’t come home in the noon” said Yosief.



We started to play video game. While we were playing suddenly we heard someone opening the door, it was his mom. She came in said “hi”, after that we turned off the TV and we went outside it was dark. When I checked the time it was around 6:30, I couldn’t believe it and I asked Yosief if I can barrow the game and go home. He gave me the CD and I started to walk home. When I got home I straightly went to my bedroom to play the game Yosief gave me, and I started to play until the maid came and told me to eat my dinner. Since I was tired after dinner I straightly went to my bedroom.



“Simon, open the door,” said my mom. It was eight o’clock she never woke me up that early in summer time.

When I opened the door “I been knocking your door for 10minutes” said my mom.

“Really, why did you woke me up, it’s only eight o’clock?” I said.

“To whom did you give the check yesterday?” said my mom.

“What check?” I said I already completely forgot about it.

“The check I gave you yesterday in the office,” said my mom.



I started to think about what I did before that day. And my mom was right, but I didn’t remember where I putted the check. I checked everywhere but I couldn’t find it and I told my mom I couldn’t find it. My mom was nervous and told me it was a lot of money and she can’t void the check by calling to the bank, because the bank is closed weekends.

“How much money is it” I asked

“300 hundred thousand” said my mom nervously



I couldn’t believe that I lost that much money. While we were talking I heard the phone rang and the maid gave the phone to my mom. It was Yosief’s mother. My mom and Yosief’s mom knows each other for long, and she told my mom she found an envelope that doesn’t belong to her. She explained my mom what it looks like and it was the envelope that I lost.



From that day I knew how much my parents trust me, if they didn’t trusted me they wouldn’t gave me the stupid check which was painted by blue ink. And I still couldn’t believe how stupid I were before that day.
