Pls tell me the meaning

Yesterday some guest visited our home they had a small baby.
she inserted her finger into her nose & started removing small particles(dirt) which was
in the nose.I told her not to do that by saying ("stop fingering into your nose")
every one started laughing at me.
Iwant to know whether my sentence was right? if not
How to put that in words?& what is the exact word for the particles in the nose?
I hope u understood what I want to know.

pls reply to me asap.
thanks.

People would usually use the verb picking (or pecking) for the activity the girl was doing. I don't think we have a polite word for the dirt she excavated, "bogey" is the only thing I can think of!
