Hi Teacher,
Please help me review IELTS essay task 2.
Topic: The impact that the growing demand for more flights has had on the environments is a major concern for many countries. Some people believe that one way to limit the number of people travelling by air is to increase tax on flights. To what extend do you think this could solve the problem?
Increasing carbon pollution from growing aviation becomes a critical concern for many authorities. People believe that increasing tax on flights to reduce airline passengers is one of actions nations should take to protect communities from dangerous impacts of climate change. I agree somewhat with this idea.
On the one hand, there are a number of reasons why governments should raise the flight taxes to limit airline travel. First, since unregulated pollution from aviation is the fastest-growing source of the greenhouse gas emissions which drives global climate change, limiting air travel is required. In fact, flights are using fossil fuel for energy, it could produce a large quantities of carbon emissions which heat to the atmosphere and lead to climate change. Since cheaper airfares encourage people to fly rather than taking less environmental damage like train or bus, higher tax for airline passengers might lead to higher airline ticket prices, which could consequently reduce unnecessary flights. Second, since fossil fuel seems not environmentally friendly, governments can use the increase to finance the long-term projects that could help to develop potential alternative fuels.
On the other hand, I believe that countries should take other solutions into consideration rather than raising tax. First, reducing carbon emissions need to be balanced with allowing people the opportunities to fly, especially for low income people. In fact, majority of airline passengers have high income hence the higher airline ticket price is also adaptable for them while it seems not fair with low income passengers who travel by air in emergency situations. Second, scientists argue some new fuels that burn more cleanly and completely, resulting in less pollution. This means that nations should pay more attention on deeper investment in sustainable fuels and enable them to advance in aviation industry to replace fossil fuel, which can help to reduce detrimental impacts on the environment.
In conclusion, besides increasing tax on flights to limit the number of people travelling by air, countries should also consider replacing fossil fuel with more environmentally friendly energy to reduce carbon pollution.
