In the recent decades, the question of whether countries should be more self-sufficient food supply and import less or not has been receiving a great deal of public attention. Although this suggestion is the pathway to sustainable development, but it is not always the case for every nation.

Becoming self-sufficient food supply brings numerous merits for the society. First, in order to maintain national food security, producing adequate food source independently from other countries should be the top priority. For example, populous countries can face starvation if the government is unable to serve enough food for high population, which can threaten national security. Second, if nations can produce food for themselves, they can also improve the quality of life for their citizens. This means that, domestic production may provide fresher food with lower price because of reducing transportation cost and import tax, which citizens can adapt easier, especially for the poor.

There are a number of reasons why countries may not be able to import as less food as possible. First, since it seems impossible for some countries to provide enough food for their population, they must import a thousand tons of food from others, like China, the U.S, India, Brazil, to ensure food security every year. In fact, in developed countries, fewer and fewer people are choosing farming as an occupation, which results in shortage of domestic supply. Moreover, even India, one of top 5 food exporters of the world, has experienced the high hunger percentage every year due to rapid population growth. Second, thanks to importing activities, consumers from different countries are offered more choices with better quality. This means that people are able to enjoy different kinds of specialties from others and this trend will encourage healthy competition between local and foreign suppliers, which results in improving food quality.

In conclusion, this suggestion is quite attractive to ensure sustainable development by enhance food security and keep food price down. Governments can make the best solution by considering all the conditions of their countries.
