Pls help me correct the essay

Topic: People think that countries should produce the food their population eats and import less food as much as possible. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Essay:

The idea that food consumed by citizens should be provided by domestic production and imported as little as possible remains a source of controversy. In my opinion, nations should produce adequate food for their population, I also agree that many countries might depend heavily on import food.

On the one hand, developing domestic production to provide enough food brings numerous benefits for the society. First, in order to maintain national food security, producing enough food independently from other countries should be the top priority. For example, populous countries can face starvation if the government is unable to supply enough food, which can threaten national security. Second, if nations can produce food for themselves, they can also improve the quality of life for their citizens. This means that domestic production may provide fresher food with a lower price because of reduced transportation cost and import tax, which citizens can afford easier, especially for the poor.

On the other hand, there are a number of reasons why countries may not be able to import food as little as possible. First, since it seems impossible for some countries to develop domestic production, they must import a thousand tons of food from others, like China, the U.S, India, Brazil, to ensure food security every year. In fact, in developed countries, fewer and fewer people are choosing farming as an occupation, which results in a shortage of domestic supply. Moreover, even India, one of top five food exporters of the world, has a high percentage of people who go hungry every day due to rapid population growth. Second, thanks to importing activities, consumers from different countries are offered more choices with better quality. This means that people are able to enjoy different kinds of specialties from other regions and this will encourage healthy competition between local and foreign suppliers, which results in improving food quality.

In conclusion, I recognize that this suggestion is quite attractive to enhance countries food security as well as keep food price down. I would argue that in many countries importing food seems be the best option.
