My essay:
People have differing views about the reasons for learning a foreign language. While it often stated that traveling and working are all reasons, I would argue that people have alternative reasons for learning a different language.
Traveling or working is one of the most important reasons to learn a foreign language. Most visitors want to learn a foreign language because they do not want to face language barriers. It will behave many embarrassing misunderstanding when things get lost in translation. For example, in Vietnam, people have varieties of local food but they do not have an English name. Banh beo, banh nam, banh cuon are traditional food made by rice and a variety of ingredients such as meat, fish and maybe even vegetables. But most translation is wrong and call them "cake". "Cake" in English can not show the right meaning. So, foreigners should learn Vietnamese if they want to taste ethnic and local food easily on their trip. In contrast, most trips have short time and learning language is unlikely to affect a lot. In some cases, although visitors do not learn a foreign language, they can enjoy their trip and have a great experience. In addition, working is an important reason but it is not all. It is helpful and beneficial for their business. They can easier to contact with their colleagues, boss. Their job will be more effective and it contributes a lot to career development. In contrast, many people do not work in a foreign country but they are keen on studying the language.
There are many reasons that lead me to believe that people have varieties of reasons except not only working and traveling to learn a foreign language. First, people want to broaden their horizons. For instance, Gordon Ramsay is one of the best chefs in the world. When he traveled in Vietnam, he had a chance to taste Bun which is one of the most popular local food. He tried to understand the meaning of Bun by the Vietnamese language. That is the best way to help him have a full feeling with Bun. Second, it is widely known that people want to learn about a foreign culture so they start learning the language. Tim Doner who is well-known for his language ability said one of the best reason to learn a foreign language is that understanding the culture and protect them. Every 2 weeks, another language dies. No more people speak it, so it becomes a death of their mythology, history, and folklore when people lose their language. Currently, Tim Doner can speak 25 languages. He speaks, understands and spread languages. Foreigners learn Vietnamese, so they can understand Vietnamese food, Vietnamese people and Vietnamese life. Other learn France to answer why it is the most romantic language in the world. Language is beautiful and conceals art, culture, so people learn a language not only for their trips or their business but also their hobbies or for discovering and protecting culture.
In conclusion, working or traveling is one of the most important reasons to learn a foreign language but I believe that people still have alternative reasons for learning a language.
People have differing views about the reasons for learning a foreign language. While it often stated (ungrammatical verb) that traveling and working are all reasons , (wrong expression) I would argue that people have alternative reasons for learning a different language. Traveling or working is one (you gave two , not one.
