Do we need (the) or just optional at the following sentence ?

I will be very pleased to meet you in my office at 10:30 am on (the) 8th April.

I was taught you pronounce the "the" when you speak out the date, but you don't actually write it. Of course things may have changed...

Pieanne is right! I too learned we should write "on 8th April" but should speak "on the 8th of April".
