1b00This state of affairs only could happen when the environment was absolute secure and homogeneous (The absolute federalism system of China had lasted for nearly two thousands years.) Once the environment came under increasing pressure from outside and when new groups, capable of offering alternative source of patronage, such as those patriotic intellectual in late Qing Dynasty, began to appear inside it, the literary system crumbled very rapidly. Chinese imperial examination disappeared when the last emperor of Qing Dynasty was overruled. Before that, many young reformists advocated to abolish imperial examination which they thought was totally pedantry and impractical. The new patrons who hoped to establish a new literary system began to explore another model for a new poetics; in fact what they were more interested in was the ideology. The social transformation was their greatest expectation since China became a semi-colonized country under the ruling of emperor. The social transformation needs the effort of mass of Chinese whose thought had been ruled and imprisoned for two thousand years. Social change would be impossible without the change of literary system Novel was chosen to be the new model to establish new poetics of literary system. In the service of weakening and enlightening most Chinese people, the new model should be to most people’s taste and interest, should not be against norm and standard of popular literature, besides, establishment of new poetics should be universally acknowledged and powerful. As I mentioned in Chapter one, in late Qing Dynasty, translation moved into center of literary system for certain purpose. Detective fiction was chosen to be pioneer of the new literary movement owing to its specific characteristics. Detective fiction was very popular in European countries, great power in the world. The detective fiction, product of great power must be persuasive to Chinese and can satisfy Chinese’s curiosity about those countries who invaded China. 02b0-
