The specific aims of this research is to regenerate Venus Fly Trap, which is kind of Insectivorous or Carnivorous plants .These plants are able to catch flies, bugs, and insects by their jaw leaves. Once happened, the leaves excrete a digestive enzyme to digest the insects. This can help the plant to absorb nutrients, which is can not be found in its soil.
In this research, two different pieces of Venus Fly trap are used. One was amount of leaves that are connected to each other by one stem, and other was one leaf of the plant. These pieces were placed to the medium in order to grow.
The hypothesis of this study is: Does the single leaf of the Venus Fly Trap plat without its stem able to regenerate the whole plant?
Background and Significance
There are many kinds of plants have been discovered by plant scientists. Each kind of plant has unique characteristics that make it special and has own features. These characteristics occur in plant depend on its environment. Generally, plant needs sunlight, water, carbon dioxide, and soil. Soil should contain minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and nitrogen in order to let the plant grow normally.
A certain kind of plant appears in soil that has low-nutrient. This kind of plant called Carnivorous Plants or Insectivorous Plants. There is a relationship between Insectivorous plants and insects, more insect they trap may increase their chance to live. Trapping insect provides the plants amount of nitrogen they need to make proteins.
My study is about one of the Insectivorous plants, which is called Venus Fly Trap. This plant catches and digests animal prey. The process of feeding is done by its leaves, the inside of the leaf is colored red and a scent is secreted, both these attract insects to the plant. Also on the inside of the leaves are small hairs which sense the presence of something inside the trap. When the hairs are touched, the leaves close in on the insect inside. Once enclosed, the plant covers the insect in digestive fluid which contains digestive enzymes and breaks it down in order to absorb the nutrients contained in the insect. Speed of closing can vary depending on the amount of humidity, light, size of prey, and general growing conditions.
Venus Fly Trap can eat all kinds of bugs, flies and insects. The plant then excretes digestive enzymes that break down the meal, providing nutrients that the plant cannot get from the soil. Doing research on this kind of plant can help to protect many farms from dangerous kind of Insect or bugs, that may affect the agricultural crops.
Experimental Design and Methods
Venus Fly Trap has a typical plant structure. The lower portion of its leaves is bladelike, and the outer portion of each leaf is divided into two halves that form the trap. The edge of the trap has long spines, which help to catch the prey.
Equipments are required to do the experiment:
