In many schools and universities, girls tend to choose arts subjects (eg. languages) and boys choose science subjects (eg. Physics). What do you think are the reasons? Do you think that this tendency should be changed?

It is true that girls commonly enroll in arts classes and boys attend science courses. Two factors stand out as being responsible for this trend, and I would argue that this tendency should be changed.

There are two main reasons contributing to this trend. First, each gender has it own nature. For example, most girls are delicate and romantic. Therefore, they tend to be good at appreciating the aesthetic qualities of works of art and expressing themselves, so they are apt to make their grades as being art students. While boys are often straightforward and logical, which enables them to have a good grasp of analytical classes such as math, physics and chemistry. In addition, this trend may stem from students being bombarded with traditional perception that a gender can only excel at a certain subjects and not others. For instance, the majority of male is usually hesitate to choose art subjects, as they think that literary appreciating would be out of their dept and fear falling behind their studies.

From my own perspectives, this tendency should be changed immediately. Social prejudices from the past show that each person should choose their own study fields which suit their genders. However, students should freely follow their own passions, be allowed to study any types of subjects and express themselves through their majors. This would dispel the misconception that the science is meant for boys while arts is only for girls, and eventually gender discrimination will be eradicated so that everybody can seize more opportunities in following their dreams.

In conclusion, gender discrimination and old prejudices will adversely affect on students in choosing their own subjects. Accordingly, it is vital to shift this trend in order to give students more choices.
