American’s spend $800M dollars a year for security software applications to protect their computer systems. Microsoft and IBM are the leading software publishers of security products for home and commercial infrastructure. These products are designed to protect our systems from computer viruses, spyware, and email spam.

Computer viruses cost American companies on average 12 full work days a year. If those same corporations eliminate just 2 of those days of downtime, they would increase their quarterly profits by 1%. For example, 1% of IBM’s quarterly profits would be $165 million dollars. IBM could purchase a small internet search company for $173M dollars. Google, currently the world’s most successful internet search company, approached IBM in 1999 and offered to sell for $100M dollars. However, IBM did not have enough available cash to purchase Google at the time. Google’s revenue last year was $1 billion dollars at 39% margin. Google is the most profitable internet search company in the world; IBM lost $2 million dollars in 2005 with its internet search engine. As you can see, computer viruses can change the present and future leaders in niche technology leadership.
