Please..the incorrect version of this sentence is......and i changed it to...

incorrected vercion is=What did you say was your name?

corrected version is=What did you say your name was?

i corrected the sentence but dont know grammaticaly why my sentence is better. i know the uncorrected sentence is wrong cuz it just sounds bad but grammatically, can u explain the corrected verion for me so i can know the grammar part of it better? please?

Now, you might point out that English questions often reverse the noun-verb order ("Is that you?" "Are we there yet?"). But this is true of independent clauses in a question (which is why we say "What did you say...?"
