1. Introduction In the first half of the nineteenth century Great Britain needed to be reformed because of many social disasters. Unemployment and the industrial crisis developed in Lancashire and many other parts of England. This difficult situation had an effect upon unemployment and a lot of workers` rebellions, accompanied with busters and maraudings. The old law (the New Poor Law) from times of Queen Elizabeth was not accepted by people and brought the nation to crisis. Beginning from 1836 a lot of meetings against this law happened in England. The programme of political reform was written in the document, named People's Charter and was created in 1838. The programme which was put forward was great: Factory Reform, Currency Reform, abolition of the New Poor Law and of the Corn Laws. All these demands were buried in the great demand for democratic institutions through which all the desires of the people might become law. Dorothy Thompson described the theme of her book The Chartists as the time when "thousands of working people considered that their problems could be solved by the political organisation of the country." The Chartist movement can be divided in three important points: the first wave , the third national petition 1848 and the legacy. In my work about the Chartist movement I will present the most important points. In the process I want to ask the question, how important was the Chartist movement to British people. I will explain the meaning of Chartism and the most important aims of the three Chartist Petitions. Then I will describe the People's Charter and present why Chartism broke up. The End of the movement plays a very significant role in the history of Great Britain. My work will be ended with a conclusion, where I summarize and notice the most essential points of this movement.
