The meaning of life

On the time scale of history of the earth, an individual human lifetime is mere a blink of eyes. We're born, we live, and we die--and then we are "heard no more".
And of course since human beings became the master of the whole world, we have never stopped the steps of seeking the answer to one eternal question----what’s the meaning of life. We think, and then get confused. Although thousands of years have passed, we are still considering “what’s the point of living”. Just as reading a book, different people may have different opinions. It is the same with life’s meaning. Some say life is a tragedy. We came to the world by chance, but after tens of years our lives ended up in death eventually. Whatever you are a famous scientist or an ordinary worker; an Asian or a European, a tombstone is our common destination of the journey of life. Some say life is a comedy. We experience more happiness than sadness. If we can catch the sight of a gleam of the sun when we open the curtain in the morning, we should be happy. Then we will find an interesting phenomenon. The pessimistic look older than they are while the optimistic younger. That’s why we cannot judge a person’s age by his look.
I remember Jean de la Bruyère once said “Life is a tragedy for those who feel, and a comedy for those who think.” when I first read this quote, I didn’t understand its meaning as well as the meaning of life. Year by year, my daily life tells me what it means. It’s about mood. Doing the same thing, a happy man must do better than a sad one.
It reminds me of one story which I read in newspaper. One day, several miners were trapped under a mine. No food, no water, no fire. What they have is one watch only. At that moment, the oxygen can merely support them for half an hour. The leader of these men held the watch and told others how much time left before the oxygen was used up. The deadline already came. But the leader told a white lie “we still have ten minutes”. Others just waited. They didn’t know they had reached the limit of life. You may have known the ending of this story. They were all saved except the leader, for only he knew the truth.
It is the leader that saved the others. More importantly, it is the relaxing mood that saved them.
Facing difficulties, we cannot always rely on others’ help. In fact, in many occasions, there is nobody to depend on .we are the best helps for ourselves because we can control our mood. We can do much better than we imagine.
Though I cannot give you an exact answer to the question, which I mentioned at the beginning, I can tell you that every boy and girl is a gift from God to your parents. Our looks, shapes even personalities were decided before we were born. But we still can hold our destiny in our own hands. God left us the right of decision-making for mood. If you choose to live happily, you also choose a road to success and happiness. And when you are too old to walk, you will realize the meaning of life naturally.
Remember: when it is dark enough, you can see the stars.
