Please tell me the difference!?

Hello experts,

Suppose if you were to get permission to do something, say for example kissing someone, by using "Do you mind if I ~?" and "Would you mind if I ~?" .....,
With "Do you mind if I ~?", I believe you can say like "Do you mind if i kiss you?".
But by using "Would you mind if I ~?", would you say "Would you mind if i kiss you?" or "Would you mind if I kissed you?"

Which do you prefer to use and why?
and if both are equally used, what is the difference between the two?

Thank you so much in advance for answering.

Do you mind if I kiss you Would you mind if I kissed you. The second is conditional and is therefore slightly more tentative/polite.
