There are many important qualities that make up an outstanding teacher, so many so, that I would never be able to fit them all on to one page of paper. I will, however, outline the three traits I feel are amongst the most vital in an educator. First and foremost, an outstanding teacher needs to have a true love of children. This is the basic building block upon which a career as a successful, outstanding educator is founded. The curiosity and astonishment found in the children’s eyes, the song in their laughter and the pure love you can feel radiate from them; this is the benefit of teaching our future. If the essential love of these things is unfounded, one will never be labeled as outstanding as a teacher. The second component of an outstanding teacher is the ability to bring an abstract idea to an understandable concept at the student’s level; to make somewhat complicated concepts seem quite literally like child’s play. Amazingly, some of the smartest people in the world would not qualify as an outstanding teacher because they lack this ability. If a teacher is not able to convey the required information in a way that the child is able to comprehend it, then they are not teaching! Last, but not least, an outstanding teacher must possess a sincere passion for the profession. It may be an attribute that some are just born with, but you can feel it. I know this, because I feel it. I am strangely most comfortable when I am in front of 25 students who look to me to be their confidant, their friend, their protector, their role model and most importantly, their educator. Someone who is an outstanding teacher not only feels this passion, they embrace it. When one teaches with passion, they are not simply teaching a lesson, they are teaching curiosity; a lifetime of learning. Overall, outstanding teachers are made up of a truly unique combination of qualities that make them different and special in their own unique way. All in all, it seems that a truly outstanding teacher is one who does not merely pass through the child’s life but who leaves an everlasting impression on their mind and heart.
