The personality of the Human Service Worker is probably the single most significant factor in determining effectiveness in dealing with people.
The key word in this statement is personality , obviously you need to have the right personality to deal with people in this field ,y ou cannot go into this with the attitude that you don’t want to be bothered today or you don’t like this person are that person . How we use are personality to help people is important. We all have “natural helping skills” that we use when we help out our families, friends or even experiences that we may have went through, we assist the with guidance or advice on how to handle certain situations..
There are different types of human service provider’s , social workers experience the most of a persons well being ,mind and soul they deal with issues that effect people. Compared to the term Social Betterment in Chapter 2 this would be determined as persons social needs.
When dealing with people in the society you need patience and the willingness to help other people as well as showing empathy for their problems .Also, when dealing with people you need good listening skills and should be able to provide confront and give positve feedback to the person you are helping and reporting to. Another important trait to have is good writing skills,. This is important because when you document your reports they should be written in a professional manner . All human service worker’s has a code of ethics which is listed in the National Association of Social Workers, which states
”The primary mission of the social worker’s profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.
As we discussed in class about what field of social work did we most have an interest in some said they would like to work with children, the elderly ,low income while others mentioned chemical dependency and mentally handicapped is the field that would like to specialize in. Even though everyone had a different path they wanted to pursue, you shouldn't turn anyone away no matter which field you specialize in .You can point them in the right direction or find paperwork and number to give them to help them in whatever problem they might have.
