Please someone help me to understand the reason why my sentence was corrected as follows.

Mine:I guess that he has been trying to win more than
fifteen years.

Teacher's:I guess/know that he was trying to win this championship
for more than fifteen years.

I thought that mine described well how he kept making an effort to win. If the usage of past perfect continuous here is not appropriate, please let me know the reason. Thanks for your help as always.

Your version is present perfect continuous. If his is still trying to win, then yours would be fine if you made it '... for fifteen years'.
