Please , someone explain it to me.

First of all I apologize for my bad English.

There is a talent show for student in my country has asked a question: If he .... lucky, he would get a job

A. is

B. have been

C. would be

D. would have been

and the answer given was A. I was so confused because I thought it should be "were" . Please , someone explain it to me.

"Were" is only for untrue, impossible or very unlikely situations.

e.g. If he were rich, he would not need to beg for a ride to school.

Getting a job is not an impossible act, is it?

The question is not good English. This is better:

If he .is. luc

I'm not convinced of their answer. I think you're correct. There is "If" before the subject "He". So, they should have used the past tense. The best answer is "were" but "was" is correct too.

If he were lucky, he would get a job.

We understand that he didn't get a job because he was not lucky.
